The stories of our Elders are like the stars in the sky. If we don't listen to them, they'll disappear.

From These Embers

The sparks that were fanned to revitalise this language

Languages burned brightly for thousands of generations in South East Queensland. But by the 1980s nearly all of these fires had been reduced to embers. Usually all that remained were a handful of written records, memories and audio recordings. Even our people who could speak had neither resources nor support to pass it on.

Yet from these embers, devoted individuals have worked to bring language back into everyday life, including in the resources on this website. Click here to learn about the people who have helped this language back from lost. Read of their legacies. And see some of the earliest records, wordlists and stories that they have left for future generations.
