A brief note about the Indigenous Language words used on this website.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, most Indigenous people did not keep a written record of their language. Language was learned orally and through story and song. Since that time, various researchers, linguists, anthropologists, teachers and others have attempted to record the languages at different times.

The wordlists that are now available from that research can sometimes vary depending on the person writing down the words, their experience and background and the people from whom they obtained the words.

We have used the most commonly accepted wordlists available for each language group but you may find different spellings, pronunciations or even entirely different words used by families, communities or individuals.

None of these are wrong in any way - simply a different interpretation or history of the user or group.

This learning platform is a starting place for your Indigenous language journey and you may go on to do your own research in your local community to add even more language to your skills.
