Bringing the stories and language of our region to life
The team drawn together by SEQILC has worked with Aboriginal languages for decades. The team includes one of Australia's only Aboriginal linguists, who combines community knowledge with academic research to ensure high quality resources for those who want to learn or teach language.
Team members have presented stories to local, national and international audiences and partnered with technology giant Google to create Indigenous language learning technology that is now used by communities globally.
Our motto: for mobo jarjum - tomorrow's children.
In South East Queensland schools, students have been learning an Aboriginal language version of the national anthem since 2012. National Parks have introduced Aboriginal names to their signage. And the bright blue bear - Borobi - of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games still adorns the footpaths and public spaces of the region. All of these outcomes reflect the work of the team from SEQILC. And as we celebrate the United Nations declared International Decade of Indigenous Languages, we will help people make their voices louder.
Our mission
At SEQILC we aren’t just about preserving the past. We are also weaving Indigenous languages into everyday life. We encourage people to use languages in greetings and in conversations. To make this a reality, SEQILC provides resources and tools that make integrating language possible. These small steps pave the way for a future where Indigenous languages are not just remembered, but actively spoken and celebrated in everyday interactions.
